1 - I'd like to thank Honeywell, for making so many programmable thermostats, with so many options. I look forward to waking up to a warm house, rather than freezing my feet off in the morning.
2 - I'd like to thank my dad, for giving me a little awl in my toolbox, so I didn't need a drill to install the new thermostat, just the awl and a hammer and a little optimism.
3 - I'd like to thank the guy at work who lent me a little plastic hemostat-type clamp, which I clipped onto my newly exposed wiring, thus allaying my fear that the wires would fall back into the wall and I would be totally screwed.
4 - I'd like to thank the Academy, for giving me the honor of being here tonight. You like me, you really like me!
5 - Most importantly, I'd like to thank this dude, for going through the process, including explaining where my two totally unmarked, matching wires from the furnace, should be attached on the new thermostat - with pictures! Thanks, dude.

Does anyone need some mercury? Anyone making any felt? I can hook you up.

The internet is a great source of thermostat-related information. The thermostat in the lab / office in grad school was pretty old-fashioned - certainly not digital - and couldn't really be replaced. One of the other grad students had completely fucked with it so that the rooms were always cold. I took it upon myself to fix it, which meant taking the cover off and recalibrating it. This was roughly as esoteric an operation as it sounds. I found one web site that walked me thorugh it. Some guy had done a bunch of HVAC work for his church and put the website up so that they'd be able to maintain what he'd done without him being there. And one of the things he did was recalibrate all their thermostats, which just happened to be the same thermostats Hopkins installed in the building my lab and office were in.

See, that is one of those things where I'm like, "Before the Internet, what would we have done? How did people manage?"
