Earthshattering Changes!

Apparently, LJ has changed in the time since I joined...go figure. There are certanly a lot of options, even for those of us who refuse to pay. If the new format has caused weird things to happen that you notice, please let me know - I am so overwhelemed by all the things I can screw with, I think it's best if I just...don't.

Chronicles of Riddick

... ah, what a great bad movie. To this day I can't figure out exactly why it was crap. I mean, the plot was interesting enough, the special effects were good. But the movie was a lump a manure.

And it had Dame Judi Dench in it! Did you see Pitch Black, the 'prequel'? Also crap, though entertaining crap. I have a secret, passionate love for Vin Diesel, and I am ashamed.

Pitch Black is /much/ better than Riddick because PB was a stupid horror film. And it was a good, scary, tense movie. The premise was dumb, and it was kinda post-modern in a way that I expect will seem dated in a few more years. But it was still good for what it was. Riddick tried to be much more and just didn't cut it.

I recall enjoying the movie, but also feeling there were quite a few missing pieces that would have really brought it together. As it was, it was an indulgence in Vin Diesel being bad-ass, which is certainly respectable in-and-of-itself. ("A teacup. I am going to kill you with a teacup.")

Actually, I seem to recall being told that the director's cut version steps it up quite a bit in quality, though I can't verify that myself.
