Big Dork, part 2

“All capital letters are either straight lines or curved lines. The worst-case scenario is pretty much ‘B.’ ”

The NYT Online has a really great article about....um...fonts, actually, and the development of a particular font to be used in U.S. highway signs. If you're a big font dork (as I am), or design dork, you will enjoy it. You might have to register to read it, though I think you can lie like a cheap rug on the personal info; it also won't be up for long. But - take a peek, it's a good article!

No science

I liked the article. I was a little disappointed that there wasn't really any science on how to make a better, more readable font. I guess it's good that they did a lot of emprirical tests - sometimes that's all you can do. I was just hoping for more theory behind making roadsigns more readable, and instead found out it was a lot of intuition, feel, and guess-and-check. Interesting article, though.
